So the other day I got the bright idea to shave the little dog. So I fired up the trimmer and started zipping hair off. Shaved the belly, shaved the sides then I moved to the legs. He has really skinny legs. Like chicken legs! So trimmy trimmy trimmy on the hind legs and I discovered that his hind dew claws are SO LONG that they have curled around and are poking the fleshy part where they come out. Obviously they haven't been trimmed in a long time, if not ever. So I continued to shave, I even shaved his tail. I think I took about 1.5 pounds of fur off him. The shaver was getting rather hot so I decided to stop. Just had his head and shoulders really to do anyways, that could wait. I decided to clip the nails off tonight. I wanted to find a pair of dykes *the tool, not a pair of lesbians* so I could clip half of it off so I could get the real pet nail trimmer on there to do a nice job. It wouldn't matter that it would break and tear with the dykes, since it would be so far away from the end of it. I couldn't find a pair, so I used some human toenail trimmers on it. The first pair I used were really dull, so I had to get another set. I took ahold of his little leg and snipped as softly as I could, taking a half inch of nail off, that was half way on it since it was so long, it left an indentation on the fleshy part. I finished that one up with the pet trimmer. Good looking job! Not bad for my first time. Then I grabbed ahold of his other leg and again, as softly as I could I snipped the other one in half. This one seemed to be stuck after I snipped it off, so I pinched it between my fingers and softly pulled it away. Poor thing, it had grown so long that it was actually IN his flesh! A little blood and goo came out with it. He didn't make a sound though. Good dog. I went to go get some hydrogen peroxide to clean the hole out with, but after looking and looking I couldn't find any. So I used the next best thing. I had some iodine solution left over from when I had my guts cut open. Put a little of that on a Q-tip and rub that around in there. I did that a few times. He certainly didn't like that one bit but it was for his own good. On more careful examination of the claw, it was about three quarters of an inch, with the extra quarter inch that it had over the first claw I clipped being inside his fleshy part. I will apply more iodine tomorrow and wait a few days before trimming the rest of his nails. I'm sure that he will heal just fine and wont get an infection.
Yay for shaved animals! Aren't they fun! But it IS winter, so he shivers alot sometimes. Next shaving project is a moody Maine Coon Cat. *chuckles* She's a biter.
